We are two farm kids who grew up just over the river in Long Grove and Bellevue, Iowa. Our farm upbringings instilled a solid work ethic and moral fortitude in each of us. Despite the fact we both did our share of dragging our feet while growing up with the farm work, we sure do appreciate how it has shaped us. We want that same moral grounding and sense of accomplishment for our children.
So before our first child (Max) was even a glimmer in our eye, Bill purchased this timbered lot of 10 acres. Endless firewood, our maple syrup operation, a large garden, and 1 acre pond all exist there today. Eventually we hope to add an orchard and livestock.
This ground will provide many chores for our two boys, Max and Hank – but we also expect it to be a pretty awesome playground for these two as well.
Both of us work in the agricultural industry today, Bill as an engineer for a farm equipment manufacturer and Bobbi in sales and marketing for a beef/dairy animal health company. Even though our full-time jobs are rewarding, there is a certain sense of accomplishment after sweating over a large tree all weekend to create piles of evenly split firewood or beautiful lumber for future building projects.
We are so appreciative of our neighbors for the kind words of encouragement as we’ve labored to turn this over-grown piece of property into a sustainable beauty.Tom & Sue donated their used mini-fridge to our shed to help us stay stocked with cold drinks.
Margie (90+ years old) has even rescued Bobbi as she nearly fainted one hot day in the garden.
“No hill for a climber,” has been spoken by Kenny and Sharon as they remind us we can accomplish any task – even if it may seem daunting to us at the time. If you visit our sugar shack try to spot the tribute to Kenny and Sharon.
Having a small engine repair expert nearby (Joel & Julie of Cement Monkey Engine Repair) has been a lifesaver at times for our tiller, weed trimmer, and lawn mower.
Sally & Wayne have taken photos of our progress and inspire us with their gratitude for how we try to keep the land up.
Al & Nancy are great company while we’re boiling maple syrup – especially with Al’s custom of mix of sweet with a little brandy.
